As a therapist and university instructor, Dr Jim Dincalci has been developing and researching methods to help people forgive for 17 years. His award winning book, How to Forgive When You Can't: The Breakthrough Guide to Free Your Heart & Mind, lays out how a person can get past the social taboos, lies and brain mechanisms that keep a person from being willing to forgive. In it, he gives a proven sequence of powerful methods that can heal even the most serious resentment, grudges and guilt including from abuse or trauma, so that the reader will have peace of mind and joy in their life.
Before writing the book, he taught this work for several years at Sonoma State University in their Conflict Resolution program. In addition, he has taught forgiveness work in hospitals, professional conferences, public seminars, churches, and at other universities. Most recently in 2011, he taught a semester forgiveness course at Duke University.
His book is the winner of the Living Now Book Award in Personal Growth in 2010; winner of the Global eBook Awards in psychology/Mental Health 2011; a finalist in the Indie Book Awards - Self-Help; and finalist in the esteemed 2009 Foreword Review Magazine Book of the Year Award in Self-Help.
His master’s is in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology from John F. Kennedy University; and doctorates are in Religious Studies and in Divinity from Emerson Theological Institute. He started training in psychology in graduate school at New York Medical College in 1968. Since then, he has used and taught many effective methods for healing the mind, spirit, and body. These methods helped him in his own forgiveness transformation in 1993.
That transformation and his forgiveness work with others has encouraged him to become a very strong advocate for the development of an effective forgiveness therapy and training. His book is the result of that work. His is the founder and executive director of The Forgiveness Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non profit charity, whose mission is: Building kind and peaceful families, communities, and organizations by helping people let go of their blame, resentments, grudges, and vengeance
He has worked as a child, adolescent and family therapist, as a school-based clinical therapist for the Department of Health and the Department of Education of Hawaii. He has three years of experience as a facilitator in domestic violence and anger control groups for court-ordered men and for teens in prison; was a meditation instructor for eight years; is trained as a police, fire, and emergency medical chaplain, and worked as a volunteer Law Enforcement Chaplain in Sonoma County, California.
Since the 1960's, he has also worked in traditional and alternative health, and pastoral counseling. He trained intensively anthropologists in cross-cultural healing for over ten years. From 1984 to 1991, he taught graduate and undergraduate courses in cross-cultural healing & spiritual perspectives in the Holistic Health and Psychology Departments at John F. Kennedy University, Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, and California Institute of Integral Studies, all in the San Francisco Bay Area.
