This work takes the form of an old man's diary, where he records his struggle with his self-image, and the manifestations of age, and his growing desire for his beautiful Westernized daughter-in-law. Between them, the two characters embody Japan, past and present.

谷崎润一郎（1886-1965）,日本唯美派文学大师。生于东京一米商家庭。谷崎的创作倾向颓废,追求强烈的刺激、自我虐待的快感,小说世界充满荒诞与怪异,在丑中寻求美,在赞美恶中肯定善,在死亡中思考生存的意义。他的散文世界则洋溢着浓郁的日本风,耽溺于阴翳的神秘、官能的愉悦与民族的风情。 代表性有短篇小说《恶魔》（1912）、《春琴抄》（1933）,长篇小说《痴人之爱》（1925）、《卍字》（1928）、《细雪》（1942-1948）、《少将滋干之母》（1950）、《钥匙》（1956）、《疯癫老人日记》（1962）,随笔评论集《阴翳礼赞》等。他的《源氏物语》口语译本文笔明丽酣畅。1949年获日本政府颁发的文化勋章。
