Mind-Energy brings together Bergson's most important lectures and articles between the years 1901 and 1913 in the philosophy of mind and the metaphysics of time. Here we see Bergson building conceptual bridges between his earlier theory of mind (in Matter and Memory) and the later philosophy of biology found in Creative Evolution ('Life and Consciousness'), as well as forwarding a radically innovative theory of memory and brain-function ('The Soul and the Body') based on a theory of 'attention to life' that still today mounts a challenge to the orthodoxies of cognitive science. Alongside these enhancements of Bergsonian thought, moreover, we also find Bergson making fascinating speculative interventions in the fields of psychical research and dream-theory, before finally presenting some of his most original philosophical ideas in two famous essays. In 'Memory of the Present and False Recognition', what begins ostensibly as an analysis of deja vu turns into an astounding new theory of the co-engendering of past and present, one that has been vital in the development of the concept of the Virtual in the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze; and in 'Intellectual Effort' we have a sustained investigation into representation ('images') that eventually proposes a theory of dynamic meaning based on force and affect ('feeling'), one with huge resonances for contemporary Kantian, post-Kantian, and post-phenomenological thought. This new, critical edition makes these vitally important texts available again, using the original, authorised translation by H. Wildon Carr, adding a guide to further reading and a new introduction by Bergson scholar, Keith Ansell Pearson.
